Nu-Brite Redevelopment Project
This Brownfields site, located in
Taunton’s Weir Village neighborhood, was undeveloped prior to 1937. From
1937 through 1992, Nu-Brite Chemical Company (Nu-Brite) used the
property for the manufacture of paints and varnishes. Nu-Brite
discontinued its operations in 1993, and in 1995 demolished all of the
buildings existing at the site. Only two foundations remain on the
property; all above ground storage tanks (ASTs) were removed from the
site. In April 2001, the current owners, SICO Corp. of Quebec, Canada
were advised by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the
location was inventory on the Comprehensive Environmental Response
Compensation Liability Information System (CERCLIS). Eventually the
property was tested and identified as a Brownfields site under EPA
standards. As a Brownfield site it has restriction on the use of the
land and activities that are permissible by EPA standards.
In 2007, the Neighborhood
Corporation made an accepted offer to purchase the property. |

The vision
to reuse this irregularly shaped 2.7 acre parcel of land is becoming
closer to reality. TNC, in partnership with the City of Taunton Office
of Economic and Community Development, is in the application process of
requesting EPA Brownfield revolving loan/grant funding for complete
remediation of the Nu-Brite property. We anticipate clean up efforts
will commence in spring 2010. |
